Natural Stone Veneer

How do I install a natural stone veneer on an exterior foundation wall? The wall is wood with tar paper. The natural stones are from the property.

First, to prevent water leaks into wood framed wall, ensure tar paper has no holes and hangs over the lower paper by a minimum of 6 inches.

Second, install metal lath over paper, I recommend diamond lath for strength.

Third, completely coat lath with mortar, before it dries, use a 1/4 inch notch tile trowel for a scratch coat. (This will help bond the mortar to the wall when you install the stone.)

Fourth, use veneer bonding mortar (VBM) to attach stone to the scratch coat.

Fifth, check weight of stone being used, typically anything over 8 pounds may require you to use brick ties to support the additional weight.

Hint: For large and heavy stones, you may also need to use tie wire to temporarily support the stone until the mortar has dried. Once dry, cut the wire close to the wall.

Sixth, grout if desired.
